Overview

As Christians, the Bible is central to our lives. But to get the most out of God’s Word, we must read it in its historical, cultural and literary contexts, informed along the way by how Christian thought has developed throughout history. Through Biola’s biblical and theological studies major, you’ll develop the tools you need to more effectively study Scripture and theology — whether your plans involve teaching, church ministry or seminary. You’ll also have the opportunity to explore and expand upon your spiritual gifts, preparing you for leadership roles in churches, parachurch organizations and other specialized ministries.

STUDY PROGRAM

Concentrations

  • Bible and Theology

The Bible and theology concentration takes a deep dive into Scripture and theological teaching, honing your understanding of God’s Word so you’re well-equipped to work and minister in various settings. There is no additional biblical languages requirement in this concentration.

  • Bible, Theology and Biblical Languages

In the Bible, theology and biblical languages concentration, you’ll learn to study Scripture in one of the biblical languages, Hebrew or Greek. This, in addition to in-depth theological training, equips you to know and teach the truth of God’s Word.

5-Year B.A. + M.A. in Preaching and Pastoral Ministry Program
The preaching and pastoral ministry concentration gives Bible, Theology and Biblical Languages majors the option of starting a Master of Arts with a concentration in Preaching and Pastoral Ministry during their senior year — allowing students to earn a B.A. and M.A. together in just five years. Entry into the concentration requires a special application to the biblical and theological studies department at the end of the freshman or sophomore year. Visit the catalog for application instructions.

  • Christian Ministries

The Christian ministries concentration is designed to develop your abilities and spiritual gifts for leadership in parachurch organizations or specialized ministries within the church. Along the way, you’ll gain biblical wisdom and practical insights to help disciple the specific groups to which you have been called — whether children, youth, adults, families or others.

A student with a Christian Ministries concentration must choose one of the six specializations reflecting a broad variety of ministry options in this field: Adult and Family, Children, Diversified, Early Childhood Education, Nonprofit Leadership, or Youth.
